Rajab – Observances &  Virtues

It should be known that the months of Rajab, Sha’ban and Ramadan have an absolute excellence and there are many traditions which mention their virtues.’ The Apostle of Allah (s) is reported to have said that “Rajab is the great month of Allah. No other month equals it in sanctity and merit. During this month fighting against the infidels is prohibited. Indeed, Rajab is the month of Allah, Shaban is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my nation. Surely, whoever fasts a day of Rajab secures Allah’s greatest pleasure, distances himself from the wrath of Allah, and one of the gates of Hell is shut closed for him.”‘

It is related from Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s) that he said, “For those who fast a day of Rajab, the fire of Hell recedes from them a distance of a year’s journey. And whoever fasts three days of Rajab is certain to enter Paradise.”

In another narration, the same Imam said, “Rajab is a river in the Paradise, much whiter than milk and much sweeter than honey. Whoever fasts a day of Rajab will be given a drink from that river by Allah, the Almighty and Glorious.”

lmam Ja’far al-Sadiq (‘a) is reported to have said that the Apostle of Allah (s) said, “Rajab is the month of istighfar (seeking forgiveness) for my ummah, Therefore, plead for God’s forgiveness often during this month, for Allah is all-forgiving and all-merciful. Rajab is called al-Asabb (effusion) because the mercy of Allah pours abundantly upon my ummah during this month …

So, repeat a lot …

I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I ask Him  to accept my repentance.

Daily Tasbeeh

Sheikh Sadooq reports  with reliable isnad from Salim that he said, I entered upon Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) in the month of Rajab while there still remained some days for the month to end. On seeing me, he said, ‘Salim, have you fasted at all during this month?’ I said, ‘No, by Allah, o son of the Apostle of Allah. He said to me, You have missed a reward whose full extent is known to none except Allah, the Almighty has exalted this monlh and given it a stupendous sanctity, taking it upon Himself to honour those who fast it.

I said to him, ‘O son of the Apostle of Allah, if I fast some of the remaining days of this month, will I attain some of the thawab of those who have fasted in it?

Imam replied,  ‘Salim, whoever fasts a single day of the latter part of Rajab, that will save him from the severity of the pains of death,  the horrors encountered after death, and from the torments of the grave. Whoever fasts two days of the latter part of this month will pass over the Sirat, the bridge in the Hereafter  with ease. And whoever fasts three days of the latter part of this month will be safe from the horrors of the Day of the greatest terror and will be granted immunity from Hell.’

It should be known that much merit has been ascribed to fasting in Rajab. It is stated in a report that those who cannot fast in Rajab due to illness or weakness should glorify Allah by reciting the following

Recite a hundred times a day.

Glory be to the magnificent God.
Glory be to Him, for other than whom glorification is not fitting.
Glory be to the Mightiest and the Noblest.
Glory be to Him, to whom honour and might belong and is worthy of it.

Common Services – Rajab

As for the services pertaining to Rajab, they are of two kinds:

  1. The services which are performed throughout the month and are not meant for any particular day of it;
  2. The services meant for specific days and nights of this month.

There are several observances pertaining to the first kind:

Daily Duas for the Month of Rajab

  1. Daily – Dua of Imam Sajjad (as)

Recite every day of Rajab the following dua of lmam Zayn al-Abidin (as) in Hijr Ismail, on the first day of Rajab.

O You with who possess the means to fulfil the needs of the supplicants and who know the minds of the silent. You hear  every petition instantly and  respond immediately. ‘O Allah, Your promises are true, Your favors bounteous, and Your mercy is all encompassing. So, I ask You to send salutations upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and to fulfil my needs pertaining to this world and the next. Indeed, You have power over all things,

  2.  Daily – Duas of imam Sadiq (as)

Recite this supplication which Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) recited on every day of Rajab.

Those who approach other than You are disappointed. Those who try to gain the favor of other than You are losers; those who make other than You the goal of their journey perish; and all except those who seek refuge in Your grace face desolation!

Your door is open for the seekers, and Your blessings are given to :those who seeks them, and Your grace is freely available to those – who ask for it. Access to You is granted to those who hope for it. Your provision is extended even to those who disobey You; Your forbearance extends to those who are hostile to You. Your custom is kindness even toward the sinners, and Your way is to continue to be benevolent to the transgressors.

O Allah, so guide me with the guidance enjoyed by the rightly guided and enable me to strive like the diligent. Let me not be one of the negligent who are kept at a distance from You, and forgive me on the Day of Retribution.

  3. Daily –  Another Dua of Imam Sadiq (as)

Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) that he recommended the following supplication for recitation in the month of Rajab.

O Allah, I seek You to grant me the patience of those who are grateful to You, the diligence of those who fear You, and the conviction of those who worship You. O Allah, You are the All-exalted and the All-supreme, and I am Your servant, destitute and needy. You are the All-sufficient and the All-laudable, and I am Your servant, abject and lowly. O Allah, send salutations upon Muhammad and his Family, and favor me by dealing with my misery with Your sufficiency, my ignorance with Your forbearance, my weakness with Your strength, O All-strong and All-mighty.

‘O Allah, send salutations upon Muhammad and his Family his legatees approved by You-and suffice me in regard to all that concerns me of my affairs pertaining to the present world and the next, O Most Merciful of the merciful

  4. Daily  Duas

Recite this dua every day of Rajab

‘O Allah, O Dispenser of bountiful favors and bounties apportioned amongst Your creatures, O Possessor of all-embracing mercy and all-encompassing power, and giver of immense blessings, great gifts, elegant boons and plentiful rewards! 20 You, who cannot be described by any analogy, nor compared with any like, nor overcome with the help of any supporter,

O You, who create and provide, inspire and bestow them with speech, originate and initiate it, exceed it and surmount it, you determine it in an excellent wise, form it in a perfect manner, and advance conclusive proofs, bless abundantly, reward them plenteously, and confer gracious gifts upon them.

O You who are so lofty in Your might and glory that you elude the gaze of the  creatures’ eyes, and so  close in Your subtleness as to transcend all notions of thought!

O You who are the sole sovereign of Your dominion and without a peer in the domains under your authority. Peerless in Your bounty and supremacy, there is none to contest Your rule.

O You, the greatness of whose awe bewilders the intricate subtleties of the imagination, and before whose greatness are exhausted the glances of the eyes of the world’s inhabitants!

O You before whose awe all faces are humbled, and before whose greatness all necks are bent, and whose fear makes all hearts quake. I seek You, with this praise which suits none but You, and by  the promise whereby you have vowed upon Yourself concerning the faithful who call upon you, and by the assurance You have given to answer the appeals of those who supplicate to You!

O sharpest of listeners, keenest of observers, and swiftest of reckoners! O Powerful and All-strong, send salutations upon Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and his Family, and allot me ln this month of ours the best of what You have allotted to anyone, ordain for me in Your ordainments the best of what You have ordained for anyone, and put me among those whose lives You seal with felicity. Give me a prosperous life, so long as You keep me alive, and grant me to die happy and forgiven!

‘Assume the charge of my deliverance during the questioning in the Burzakh (purgatory), spare me from Munkar and Nakir, and make Mubashshir and Bashir appear before my eyes, let my return be toward Your contentment and paradise and grant me a happy life, and a vast kingdom, and send salutations abundantly upon Muhammad and his Family!

    • This supplication is recited in the Sa’sa’ah Mosquein Koofa.

O Allah, I seek You for by the two Imams who were born in the month of Rajab, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali the Second, – and his son ‘Ali ibn Muhammad Your chosen one, and I seek nearness to You through them, which  is the best of all proximities.

You from whom all favors are sought and that which is with You is eagerly asked for, You do I ask, as an offender and sinner , whose sins have ruined him, who is a captive in the bondage of his failings, persistent since long in error, languishing in his state of disaster.

He seeks You to accept his  repentance with gracious clemency, to liberate him from  sin and to rescue his neck from the Fire, and to pardon whatever he is guilty of. For You, my Master, are my greatest hope and source of reliance.

‘O Allah, I beseech You by the noble requests made of You, and by Your sublime means, to enlist me, in this month, in Your all-embracing mercy, and grant me Your apportioned blessings and a soul content with whatever You provide it, until its descent into its grave and its arrival at the scene of the Hereafter and there whereto it is bound.

Inasmuch as Your servant’s sin is great, it will be gracious of You to pardon him

O Allah, I beseech you, knowing that You are the Sovereign, that You have power over all things, and whatever you will comes into being.
O Allah, I turn to you through Your Prophet, Muhammad, the prophet of mercy, may Allah’s salutations be upon him and his Family.

To you belongs all praise if I obey You, and Your is the justification if I dis obey You.  Neither I nor anyone else can do any good except with Your favor! O You who preexist all things, O You who bring all things into existence, you have indeed power over all things.
O Allah, I seek Your protection from switching at the time of death, from apostatizing in the grave, and from, regret on the Imminent Day!
So I ask you to send salutations upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and to make my life  a life of purity, my death a death of decency, and my place of  return an honorable one, not one – of humiliation and shame!
‘O Allah, send salutations upon Muhammad and his Family, the Imams, the fountains of wisdom, the custodians of blessings, the reserves of infallibility, and by them protect me from all harm, and do not take me away in the state of delusion and neglect, and do not make the consequences of my deeds a cause of regret, and be pleased with me, for indeed your forgiveness is meant for wrongdoers and I am one of the wrongdoers!
O Allah, forgive my misdeeds, which do not harm you, and grant me your gifts, which do not diminish you, for indeed Your mercy is expansive and Your wisdom is marvelous.
Grant me plenty, tranquility,  security, health, humility, contentment, gratitude, well-being, Godwariness, patience, trueness to You and to Your saints, ease and thanksgiving, and also include in that, my Lord, my family and children, my brethren in  You and those whom I love and who love me, those whom I have begotten and those who have begotten me, from among Muslims and the faithful, O Lord of all the worlds!

Dua to be recited after the night prayers

Ibn Ashyam says that this dua is to be recited after the eight rak’ahs of the night prayer and before the watr prayer. ‘After reciting it, the three rak’ahs of watr are to be performed. Then, after the salam, say, while sitting,
All praise belongs to Allah, whose treasures are never spent, and those who take refuge in Him  have no fear.
Lord, if I have been guilty of sins that was because of my faith in Your magnanimity, indeed You accept repentance from Your servants, pardon their misdeeds, and forgive their lapses. Indeed, You answer one who calls You to him. I repent to You from my offences and request You to enhance my portion of Your bestowals, O Creator of the creatures, O my deliverer from all adversities, O my shelterer from every danger, give me abundant joy and save me from the evil consequences of events, for You are Allah, who are thanked for your blessings and plentiful gifts and with you are the stores of all good.

Observances For The First Day of Rajab

It is a noble day and there are several observances pertaining to it.
  1. First, to fast on this day.

It is mentioned in a tradition that the Prophet Noah (as) boarded the Ark on this day and asked those who had accompanied him to fast that day. It also says that hellfire is distanced,  a distance of a year’s journey from those who fast on this day
  2. Second – Ghusl to take a bath.

  3. Third, to perform the ziyarah of Imam al-Husayn (as)

Sheikh Tusi cites a report transmitted by Bashir al-Dahhan from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) he said, that God Almighty pardons those who perform the ziyarah of Husayn ibn Ali (as) on the first day of Rajab.
  4. Fourth, to recite the long supplication cited by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in the Iqbal.
  5. Fifth – Offer the Prayer of Salman

To commence the observance called the prayer of Salman, which is to be performed as follows:

There is no god except Allah: He is One and has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is the Living One who never dies, All choice lies in His hands. and He has power over all things.
    Then say …
O Allah, there is none who can prevent what You give and none can give what You withhold, One’s wealth and fortune are of no avail against You.
Then draw your hands on your face. This prayer is performed in the same manner on the fifteenth day of Rajab, but instead of the dua just mentioned, after the words
(He is) the Single, one, Singular, and All-Embracing God. He has taken neither any partner nor child.
The prayer is performed in the same manner on the last day of the month. However, after the words
May Allah send salutations upon Muhammad and his family, the pure one. There is no power or force except what derives from Allah, the All-exalted and All-Supreme.
Then draw your hands on your face and make your request. One should not neglect the benefits of this prayers, which are many.

Among its many virtues are forgiveness of sins, safety from the ordeals of the grave and torments of the Day of Resurrection and its reciter’s recovery from leprosy, leukoderma, and pneumonia.
Sayyid Ibn Tawus has also cited a four rak’ah prayer for this day in the lqbal and those interested may refer to that book.

‘O sender of mercy from its reserves, and the producer of blessing from its origins! O you who have arrogated sublimity and highness, whence Your  friends take pride in Your might. O You in front of whom the kings wear the yoke of lowliness around their necks, being fearful of your power.

O Living One, O All-sustainer; O Living One who were living when there was no living being, O Living One, O Reviver of the dead. O Living One, there is no god besides You, originator of the heavens and the earth! “O my God and Master, send salutations on Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, have mercy on Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, and make Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad flourish, inasmuch as You have sent salutations upon Abraham and the Family of Abraham, had mercy on them and made them flourish. Indeed You are all-laudable and all-glorious. And have mercy upon my abjectness, my poverty, my loneliness, my forlornness, my humbleness before You, my reliance on You, and my entreaties before You!
I supplicate You with the petition of one who is humble, abject, full of awe, fear and dread, destitute, lowly and insignificant, hungry and needy, seeking protection. and shelter, who admits his sins, pleads forgiveness for them, and is submissive toward his Lord; with the supplication of one who has been abandoned by his trusted fellows, forsaken by his loved ones, and whose distress is great; with the supplication of one who burns with grief and, being weak, petty, destitute and abject, seeks shelter with You.
O Allah, I ask You, knowing that You are the Sovereign, that whatever You wish comes about, and that You are able to do whatever You wish! I ask You by the sanctity of this holy month, by the Holy House, by the Holy City, by the Corner (of the Ka’bah) and the Station (of Abraham), by the great sacraments and by the right of Your Prophet, Muhammad, peace be to him and his Family!
O You who gave Seth to Adam, and Ishmael and Isaac to Abraham! O You who restored Joseph to Jacob and removed the afflictions of Job after his sufferings! O You who restored Moses to his mother and increased Khadir in his knowledge! O You who gave Solomon to David, John lo Zechariah, and Jesus to Mary! O protector of Shu’ayb’s daughter! O caretaker of the offspring of Moses’ mother! I ask You to send salutations on Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and to forgive all my sins, and to shelter me from Your punishment, and to grant me Your approval, Your amnesty, Your kindness, Your forgiveness, and Your Paradise!
And I ask You to release me from every link that binds me to those who torment me; open for me every door; make easy for me every formidable undertaking; make simple for me every difficult task, and mute every speaker who talks evil against me! Hold back from me every oppressor, put down everyone of my enemies and enviers, keep off from me every wrongdoer, and suffice me with regard to every obstacle that interferes with the fulfilment of my need, keeps me from obeying You, and causes hindrance in Your worship.
O You who have reined in rebellious jinns, subdued unruly satans, vanquished the tyrants and repelled the guile of despots from those who were considered weak!  l ask You by Your power to do whatever You wish and to facilitate whatever You wish in whatever way You wish, to include the fulfilment of my need in what Your wish!
Then perform sajdah, and placing each side of the face on the ground, say:
O Allah, I prostrate before you and have faith in you. So have mercy on my abjectness and my destitution, my efforts and entreaties, my submissiveness and my need of You, my Lord!
Try to bring tears to your eyes, even if it is a semblance of moisture, for it is a sign of the supplication’s being granted.

The Twenty-Fifth Day or Rajab

The martyrdom of Imam Musa ibn Ja’far (as) occurred on this day in 183 H., and it is a day of mourning for the Family of Muhammad (sa) and their followers.

Observances for the Twenty-Seventh Night of RAJAB

This is the night of the Mab’ath (the first day of the Prophet’s ministry) and is one of the most blessed of nights, There are several observances relating to it.
  1. First is the observance mentioned by Shaykh Tusi in the Misbah. He says, Imam AbuJafar al-Jawad, (as) is reported to have said, There is a night in the month of Rajab whose virtue exceeds everything on which the sun shines and that is the 27th night of the month, on the morning of which the Apostle assumed his prophethood. There is a reward of 60 years of works for those of our followers who carry out its devotions.
When asked concerning its observances, the Imam said, after having gone to bed after the Isha prayer get up any time you wish before midnight
    Prayers to offer
    12 rak’at prayers in sets of two 6 x 2

In each rak’at after Surat al-Hamd recite

    • Any one Surat x 1
From one of the shorter Surahs called the “mufassal (which are the surahs from surat Muhammad to the end of the Holy Quran).

All praise belongs to Allah, who has neither taken any child, nor has He any partner in sovereignty, nor has He (taken) any ally out of weakness, and magnify Him with a magnification (worthy of Him).
O Allah I beseech You by the sources of Your might bound to the pillars of Your Throne, by the ultimate mercy mentioned in Your Book, and by Your supreme most Name, the greatest and the supreme most, by the most exalted of the most exalted of the most exalted of Your remembrance, and by Your consummate words, to send salutations upon  Muhammad and his Family and to deal with me in such wise as is worthy of You.

Allah Allah is my Lord, I do not ascribe any partner to Him, nor do I take anyone for a guardian and master besides Him.

This is the manner of the prayer as narrated by Sayyid Ibn Tawus from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as).

However, Shaykh Tusi writes in the Misbah, Dawud b Sirhan narrates from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) that he said: Perform a twelve-rak’at prayer on the 15th night of Rajab as follows:

Glory be to Allah, all praise belongs to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is greater.
    Then say 4 times,
Allah Allah is my Lord. I ascribe no partner to Him. Whatever Allah wills (happens). There is no force except what derives from Allah, the All exalted, the All-supreme.
  2. Second is performing the ziyarah of the Commander of the Faithful (as), which is the most meritorious act of this night.,

    Ibn Battutah’s Report

Abu Abdillah Muhammad Ibn Battutah, a Sunni scholar whose account of travels is famous, describes the shrine of our master the Commander of the Faithful (as) in the account of his journey from Holy city of Makkah to Najaf Ashraf.
Noting that all the inhabitants of the city were rafidites, he describes the miracles that occur at the shrine. He says, “On the twenty-seventh night of Rajab, which is called laylat al-mahya by the local residents, people from Iraq, Western Iran, Khorasan, Fars and Anatolia bring with them paralytics and chronically sick persons who are unable to move. About thirty or forty of them gather there. After the Isha prayer, the afflicted are brought near the sarcophagus and there the people gather and wait for the sick to be healed and to stand up. Some of them engage in prayer, some recite dhikr and some read the Qur’an, while others just look on gazing at the shrine.
This goes on until a half or two thirds of the night have passed. Then all the afflicted who were unable to move rise to their feet, sound and cured of their ailment and chanting La ilaha illallah, Muhammaddur rasulullah,’Alyun waliyullah, This is a well-known phenomenon, though I myself was not there to witness it on that night but heard it from persons whose statements may be trusted, I myself saw three men in the madrasah which serves as the shrine’s quarters for visitors. They were bedridden and unable to move. One of them came from Anatolia, another was from Isfahan and a third from Khorasan.
I asked them why they had not been cured and had remained there. They said that they had missed the night of the twenty seventh and were determined to stay on until the next year for recovery. Many people from various towns gather there for this night and a big bazaar is held which last for ten days.
The compiler says: This description is not to be treated with skepticism, as there are innumerable reports of the miracles that occur in these sacred shrines. In the previous month of Shawwal, ln the year 1343 H., three women were miraculously cured in the shrine of Abul-Hasan AIi ibn Musa al-Rida, the Eighth Imam, our master and the intercessor for the sinners of the Ummah, may Allah’s blessings be upon him. They suffered from paralysis and the like and the physicians were unable to heal them. This miracle that occurred at that sacred tomb became evident for all, like the sun in the sky or like the open city gates of Najaf for the Arab Bedouins. So much was this matter manifest that it was said that the physicians who were familiar with the cases of these women verified the facts and some of them even testified to their cure in writing. Were it not for considerations of space, l would have mentioned the details of their story.
And well has our Shaeikh, al-Hurr al-Amili, said in in his urjuzah,
The blessings of his shrine are manifested every day,
And tomorrow will be like yesterday.
The blind and the ailing are healed here,
And petitions are answered at his threshold.

Dua of Sheikh Kaf’ami in al-Balad al-Amin to be recited on the night of Mab’ath

  3. Third, Sheikh Kaf’ami in al-Balad al-Amin cites the following supplication to be recited on the night of the Prophet’s Mab’ath.
O Allah, I beseech You by Your greatest revelation which occurred on this night of the honorable month, and by the revered Apostle, to salutations upon Muhammad and his Family, and to forgive our sins, which You know better than us, O You who know and we do not know!
O Allah, make auspicious for us this night, whlch You have exalted over other nights with the dignity of the Apostleship, and given it glory with Your favor, and placed it in a sublime station to Allah.
We ask You by the noble ministry, by the gentle master and his impeccable ancestry, to send salutations on Muhammad and his Family, and to accept our devotions during this night and those performed during all other nights, to forgive our sins, to approve our good deeds, to cover our vices and misdeeds, to gladden our hearts with the gracious words (of Your promise of admission into paradise) and to bless our provisions with plenty and ease.
O Allah, You see and are not seen. You are al the highest viewpoint, and toward You is the ultimate return and goal, with You rests giving of life and death and to You belong the world and the Hereafter.
O Allah, we seek Your protection from abasement and disgrace! (We seek Your refuge) lest we should commit what You forbid.
O Allah, we ask You to admit us into paradise with Your mercy, and we seek Your refuge from the Fire, so shelter us from it with Your power.
We ask You to wed us to the houris. Provide us with Your might and make our old age the better provided part of our lives and let the best of our deeds be at the closing part of our lives. Prolong our lifespan in obedience to You, occupied with works which bring us close to You, and earn us Your favor and nearness.
Give us the best understanding in all our states and affairs. Do not consign us to the mercy of any of Your creatures who may reproach us for his favor and be graciously disposed toward us in respect of all our needs of this life and the next, beginning with our parents, our children, and all our faithful brethren in respect of what we have asked You for ourselves, O Most Merciful of the merciful!
O Allah, we beseech You by Your mighty Name and Your eternal kingdom to send salutations on Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and to forgive our great sins, for no one forgives enormities except Him who is the All-supreme!
O Allah, this is the revered month of Rajab whereby You have honored us, the first of the holy months whereby You have honored us from among all the nations. So, to You belongs all praise, O All-generous and All-munificent!
I ask You by it and by Your supreme most Name, the greatest and the supreme most, the most majestic and the noblest, which You have created, whereat it abided in Your shadow, without being revealed for anyone except You, to bless Muhammad and the pure ones of his Family, and appoint us in this month to be among those who strive therein in obedience to You, and hope therein to win intercession with You!
O Allah guide us to the right path and let our place of rest in Your vicinity be the best of resorts, in deep shade and a bountiful kingdom. Indeed, You are sufficient for us, and You are an excellent trustee!
O Allah, let us be, at our return to You, felicitous and successful, not ones who deserve Your wrath or are astray, with Your mercy, O Most merciful of the merciful!
O Allah, I ask You to grant me that which will earn me Your forgiveness and win me Your mercy, and grant me safety from every sin, a share of every virtue, and the success of (entry into) paradise and deliverance from the Fire!
O Allah, I supplicate You among those who supplicate You, beseech You among those who beseech You and appeal to You along with those who appeal to You!
O Allah, You are my reliance and hope, and in ali supplications the appeals are ultimately directed to You!

O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Family and grant conviction to my heart, impart light to my eyesight, put benevolence into my breast and Your remembrance on my tongue day and night, and provide me with an ample provision free from indebtedness (to creatures) and unlawful gain, and bless me in what You provide me.
Put contentment into my soul and a longing for that which is with You, O Most Merciful of the merciful!
    • Repeat x 100 in Sajdah
All praise belongs to Allah, who has guided us to know Him, chosen us for His guardianship, and enabled us to obey Him, and many many thanks!
    • Then rise from sajdah and say,
O Allah, I have come to You with my need, relying upon You for the fulfilment of my request, and turn to You through the mediation of my Imams and masters.
O Allah, grant us to benefit from their love, enable us to reach their goals, grant us their company and admit us into paradise in their fold, with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
Sayyid Ibn Tawus mentions this dua among those meant for the day of mabath.

Observances for the Twenty-Seventh Day of RAJAB

This is one of the major Islamic Eids, and is the first day of the Prophet’s ministry as the Apostle of Allah (sa), and Gabriel’s descent with the news of his apostleship.
There are several observances pertaining to this …
  1. Ghusl
  2. Fasting, this day being one of four days in whose fast is distinguished for its merit, being equal to seventy years of fasting.
  3. Salawaat on the Prophet (sa) and his family (as).
  4. Performing the ziyarah of the Apostle of Allah (sa) and the Commander of the Faithful (as), may peace be upon them and their Fam
  5. Offering a twelve-rak’ahs prayer as mentioned in the Misbah. ln it Sheikh Tusi cites a report from Rayyan al-salt that during his sojourn in Baghdad Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (as) fasted on the 15th and 27th of Rajab and all those who were with him did the same. He instructed them to perform a prayer of 12 rak’ahs
    Prayers to offer
    12 rak’at prayers in sets of two 6 x 2
In each rak’at after Surat al-Hamd recite
    • Any Surat x 1
After the prayer, recite x 4
    • Surat al-Fatiha
    • Surat al-Tawhid
    • Surat al-Falaq
    • Surat al-Nas

Then repeat each of the following 3 passages 4 times:

There is no god besides Allah, and Allah is greater. Glory be to Allah, all praise belongs to Allah, and there is no power or force except, what derives from Allah, the All-exalted, the All-supreme.
Allah-Allah is my Lord. I do not ascribe anything to Him as a partner.
I do not ascribe any partner to my Lord.
  6. This observance is also cited by shaykh Tusi,’ who reports Abu al-Qasim Husayn Ruh (r) as having conveyed the following instructions from the Imam (as).

    Prayers to offer
    12 rak’at prayers in sets of two 6 x 2
In each rak’at after Surat al-Hamd recite
    • Any Surat x 1
Then following the tashahhud and salam after every two rak’ahs, one should say while seated …
All praise belongs to Allah, who has neither taken any child, nor has He any partner in sovereignty, nor has He (taken) any ally out of weakness, and magnify Him with a magnification (worthy of Him),
O my provision in the course of my lifetime, O my companion in my adversity, O my patron in my blessing, O my helper in my petitions, O fulfiller of my needs, O protector of my family in my absence, O my sufficer in my isolation, O my intimate in my desolation,
You are the coverer of my faults, so to You belongs all praise!
You are the pardoner of my slips; so to You belongs all praise! You are the one who lift me up after my falls; so to You belongs all praise! Send salutations upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, cover my failings, calm my fears, pardon my slips, excuse my offenses, and overlook my misdeeds amongst the inhabitants of paradise, a true promise they have been given.
After the prayer and supplication, recite seven times:
    • Surat al-Fatihah
    • Surat al-Tawhid
    • Surat al-Falaq
    • Surat al-Nas
    • Surat al-Kafirun
    • Surat al-Qadr
    • Ayat al-Kursi
    Repeat seven times:
There is no god except Allah, and Allah is greater. Glory be to Allah, and there is no power or force except what derives from Allah.
    Repeat seven times:
Allah-Allah is my Lord, I ascribe no partner to Him.

    Another Dua for this Day

  7. As mentioned in the Iqbal and some manuscripts of the Misbah, it is mustahab to say the following supplication on this day.
You who have enjoined us to pardon and overlook (others’ faults), having assured us to pardon and overlook (our faults)! O You who pardon and overlook, pardon me and overlook my faults, O Generous One!
O Allah, requests bring scant benefit, devices and procedures fail, hopes languish and expectations break off, except when they are directed to You! You are one and have no partner!
O Allah, I find the paths of request leading up to You to be clear, the springs of hope in You to be eternal and the doors of supplication to open for those who supplicate You, and Your help is ever available for those who seek it!
I know that You are always ready to answer those who call You, ever prepared to answer the appeals of those who cry to You for help, I know that by entreating Your generosity and trusting Your promise one is spared of the refusal of the grudging and can dispense with what is in the hands of the monopolizes.
I know that there is no veil that may separate Your creation from You; rather it is their deeds that veil them from You. I know that the best provision for someone who makes the journey toward You is a resolute will, whereby he seeks only You.
Indeed, my heart calls You with resolute will, I beseech You with all the petitions whereby You have enabled an expecting servant to attain his hope, or answered distress calls of a crier who called out to You, or brought relief to any troubled and grieving soul, or forgiven an errant sinner, or completed Your blessing upon someone in sound health, or granted plenty to an indigent for such calls have a right upon You and are worthy in Your estimation-to bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and to fulfil my request and my wants pertaining to the world and the Hereafter.
This is the revered and honorable month of Rajab, whereby You have honored us, the first of the sacred months You have favored us with from among all the nations,
O Lord of generosity and munificence! We beseech You by it and by Your supreme most Name, the greatest, the supreme most, the most majestic and the noblest, which You have created, whereat it abided in Your shadow, without being revealed for anyone except You, to send salutations upon Muhammad and the pure ones of his Family, and appoint us in this month to be among those who strive therein in obedience to You, and hope therein to win intercession with You!
O Allah, guide us to the right path and let our place of rest in Your vicinity be the best of resorts, in deep shade! For indeed You are sufficient for us and You are an excellent trustee. May peace be to His elect servants, and may His blessings be upon all of them.
O Allah, grant us Your benison on this day, which You have preferred and made glorious with Your dignity and granted it a great and exalted station. Bless therein whom You sent to Your servants and settled him in a noble place.
Bless him with an everlasting blessing, which may count as our thanks to You and a reward held in store for us. Grant us ease in our affairs and let the conclusion of our lives be one of felicity till the end of our term, accepting our meagre works and rewarding us, with Your mercy, by the best of our hopes. Indeed, You have power over all things, and  Allah’s salutations be upon Muhammad and his Family and may peace be to them!
This supplication was recited by Imam Musa ibn Ja’far (as) when he was being moved to Baghdad, which was on 27th  of Rajab. lt is among the treasured supplications of Rajab.
  8. According to Sayyid Ibn Tawuis in the lqbal also to be recited on this day is the supplication.
