A Report from the Apostle of Allah (sa)
There is a report cited in Tafsir al-lmam (as) concerning the virtues of the month of Sha’ban and its first day, and there are many beneficial points mentioned in it.Our teacher Thiqat al-lslam Nuri-may Allah fills his grave with light-has translated it at the end of his book al-Kalimat al-Tayyibah. As it is a long report, an abridged version of it is as follows:Once, on the first of Sha’ban, the Commander of the Faithful (as) was passing by a group of people who were sitting in one of the mosques and were engaged in a debate concerning such matters as the problem of qadar (the Islamic version of the problem of freewill and predestination), and similar controversial issues. Their voices were raised as they debated hotly and wrangled in a vehement manner. The Imam stopped and greeted them. They answered his greeting and stood up reverently, asking him to join them. He declined their request, but he said to them:“O people who venture into matters that neither concern them nor are of any benefit to them! Don’t you know that there are servants of God who have been urged to maintain silence, not because they are incapable or dumb, but because of their trepidation? For indeed they are the most eloquent, intelligent and wise, who have knowledge of God. But when they remember the greatness of God, their tongues fail, their hearts cave in, their minds are perplexed, and their intellects are confused in front of God’s might, majesty and glory. When they recover from this state, they approach God by the means of pious deeds, counting themselves among wrongdoers and the erring, even though they are exempt from the faults of laxity and negligence, But they are not satisfied with their 1iftle service of cod, nor do they regard as plenty the works they have done for the sake of God. They do not flaunt their works before Him, and whenever you see them you will find them overcast with sorrow and awe, fearful and apprehensive.“So where do you stand, O band of mavericks, in relation to them? Don’t you know that the most knowledgeable of people concerning qadar are those who are the most reticent concerning, and that the most ignorant of people concerning qadar are those who are the most glib about it? O band of mavericks, today is the first day of the month of Sha’ban, named so by our Lord because of the ramification and branching forth (tasha”ub) of His blessings during it.To be sure, in it your Lord has flung open the gates of His paradise and presented to you the spectacle of its places and good things, attainable at the cheapest of prices, in exchange for the easiest of works, and yet you decline them, The accursed Iblis too has presented to you the branches of his multifarious evils and afflictions, and you catch hold of the offshoots sent out by Iblis, and turn away from the branches of good, whose gates have been laid open for you. This is the first day of Sha’ban. The branches of its goods are prayer, fasting, zakat, bidding what is right and forbidding what is wrong, kindness towards parents, relatives, and neighbors, resolving conflicts between people, and giving charity to the needy and the poor. You burden yourself with a task of which you have been spared, and venture to probe Divine mysteries, an exercise from which you have been forbidden, as those who try to explore them perish. But if you come to know what our Lord, the Almighty and Glorious, has prepared on this day for His obedient servants, you will cut short what you have been engaged in and start doing what you have been told to do.”They said to him, “o commander of the Faithful, what is it that God has prepared for the obedient on this day?” He replied, “I will not recount for you anything except what I have heard from the Apostle of Allah (sa). Once the Apostle of Allah (sa) dispatched a company of troops towards a people who were staunch infidels, The enemy made a sudden attack at night against Muslims, it was a pitch dark night and the Muslims were fast asleep. No one among them was awake that night except four: Zayd b, Harithah, Abd Allah b. Rawahah, Qatadah b, Nu’man and Qays b. ‘Asim Minqari. Each of them was engaged in prayer and reciting the Qur’an at one of the sides of the camp. The enemy rained arrows on the Muslims who could not shield themselves from the assailants, as they did not see because of the darkness. Such was their predicament when they suddenly saw lights burst forth from the mouths of these four men, which illuminated the battlefield for the Muslim warriors. This gave them strength and morale, pulling out their swords, they gave a good fight, killing the attackers, wounding some of them and taking others captive, “On their return when they related the incident to the Prophet (sa), he told them that those lights came from certain acts of their brothers performed on the first day of Sha’ban. Then he described the acts that each one of them had performed.“Thereafter he said, ‘when the first day of Sha’ban arrives, Iblis spreads out his troops throughout the corners of the earth and its horizons, asking them to try ro attract some of God’s servants toward themselves. Indeed, God Almighty and, Glorious also scatters His angels throughout the earth’s quarters and horizons, telling them ‘Guide My servants and show them the right way, whereat all of them will attain felicity through you, except such of them as refuse and are arrogant and rebellious. They join the party of Iblis and enter his hosts.” ‘When the first day of Sha’ban comes, God, Almighty and Glorious, commands the gates of paradise, whereat they open, and He commands the Tree of Tuba, whereat it sends forth its branches all over this world. Thereat a herald of our Lord, Almighty and Glorious, calls out: “O servants of God! These are the branches of the Tree of Tuba so catch hold of them so that they may lift you up toward paradise. And those are the branches of the Tree of Zaqqum! Beware of them! Let them not draw you toward hell.”The Apostle of Allah said, By Him who sent me as a prophet with the truth whoever approaches one of the doors of goodness and piety on this day, hangs on to one of the branches of the Tree of Tuba, whereat it takes him up toward paradise. And whoever approaches one of the doors of evil on this day, hangs on to one of the branches of the Tree of Zaqqum, which draw him toward hell.’” The Apostle of Allah (sa) then said, ‘whoever performs supererogatory prayers on this day for the sake of God catches hold of one of its branches. Whoever fasts on this day, clings to one of the branches. On this day, whoever, makes peace between, husband and wife, father and son, or between two of his relatives or neighbors, or between two strangers is one who clings to one of the branches, whoever shows lenience toward his debtor in straits or forgoes part of his debt, is one who brings to its one of its branches. Also someone who on reviewing his accounts sees that he owes an old debt to someone who has lost hope of reclaiming it, and repays his debt, is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever assumes charge of an orphan’s care on this day is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever refrains a fool from compromising the honor of a faithful person is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever recites the Quran or part of it therein is one who clings to one of the branches. Someone who remembers God and His blessings and gives thanks for them is one who clings to one of the branches. Someone who visits a sick person is one who clings to one of the branches. Someone who accompanies a funeral procession is one who clings to one of the branches. Someone who condoles with the bereaved victim of a tragedy on this day is one who clings lo one of the branches.Someone who does an act of kindness for his parents is one who clings lo one of the branches. Someone who obtains the satisfaction of his parents after they had been displeased with him earlier is one who clings to one of the branches. Similarly, someone who performs any of the various kinds of good on this day is one who hangs on to one of the branches of Tuba.’Then the Apostle of Allah (sa) added, ‘By Him who sent me as a prophet with the truth! Whoever approaches one of the doors of evil and disobedience to God on this day, hangs on to one of the branches of the Tree of Zaqqum, whereat it draws him toward hell.”Then he said, ‘By Him who sent me as a prophet with the truth! Whoever is negligent of his obligatory prayers on this day and misses them is one who clings to one of its branches.Whoever misses a fast that was obligatory on him on this day is one who clings to one of its branches. Someone who is approached on this day by a weak and indigent person whose wretched condition he knows, and he is able to change it without suffering any harm, and there is no one else who may help him and act in his stead and were he to leave him to languish and perish and fail to give him a helping hand, then he is one who clings to one of the branches of the Zaqqum Tree.Whoever that does not accept the apology of someone who has done him a wrong and instead of keeping the punishment of the offender within the limits of his offense transgresses those limits, he is one who clings to one of the branches of the Zaqqum Tree.Whoever that creates ill feeling between a husband and wife, a father and son, two brothers, two relatives, two neighbors, two friends or two strangers is one who clings to one of its branches.Whoever presses his demand hardly and harshly against someone in a pinch, knowing his difficulties, thus adding to his distress and affliction, is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever denies a debt that he owes and transgresses against his creditor forcing him to forgo his claim, such a one clings to one of the branches.Whoever mistreats an orphan, torments him or unjustly appropriates his property, is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever that compromises the honor of his brother in faith and prompts other people to do so, is one who clings to one of the branches of the Tree.Whoever that engages in unlawful singing on this day that prompts sinful actions, is one who clings to one of the branches of the Zaqqum Tree.Whoever that sits and recounts his ugly deeds in a war or his wrongful actions against God’s servants and boasts about them, he is one who clings to one of that tree’s branches. Someone who has a sick neighbor, and he does not pay him a visit due to making light of his rights, such a person is one who clings to one of the branches of the tree.Whoever that fails to rake part in the funeral of his neighbor for not giving significance to him is one who clings to one of the branches.Whoever is undutiful toward his parents or one of them is one who clings to one of the branches, Also someone who has been undutiful toward his parents and in spite of being able to make them pleased with him again on this day, does not do so, in one who has caught hold of one of the branches, similarly, whoever that commits any of the various kinds of evils on this day is one who clings to one of the branches of the Zaqqum Tree.‘By Him who sent me as a prophet with the truth! Those who catch hold of the branches of the Tree of Tuba are lifted up by those branches toward paradise.’ Then the Apostle of Allah (sa) raised his eyes towards the sky and held his glance for some moments, then he laughed joyously’ He then cast his look down toward the earth und knit his eyebrows and frowned. Then he looked at his companions and said to them, ‘By Him who sent Muhammad with the truth as a Prophet! I did see the Tree of Tuba lift up its branches and lift up those who had caught hold of its branches toward paradise. I saw that some of them clinging to one of its branches, some to two, and some to several of them in accordance with their embracing of the acts of obedience. Indeed, I saw Zayd b. Harithah hanging on to most of the branches as they raised him up to the loftiest heights of paradise, and that is why I laughed with joy. Then I looked down at the earth, whereupon I saw, by Him who sent me as a prophet with the truth, I saw the Tree of Zaqqum retracting its branches as they drew down with them those who hung on to them toward hell.. I saw some of them hanging on to one of the branches, some to two and some to several of them, in accordance with the degree to which their conduct embraced ugly and shameful deeds. Indeed, I saw one of the hypocrites hanging on to most of its branches as they retracted taking him down to the lowest of the reaches of hell, and that made me frown and knit my eyebrows.”‘The Third Day of Shaban

Ø Recite the following duas
This is an auspicious day, and according to Shaykh Tusi, Imam al-Husayn ibn Ali (as) was born on this day. In a message sent by the Imam of the Era (as) to Qasim b. ‘Ala’ Hamdani, a representative of the Imam Hasan al-‘Askari (as), it was stated: “Our master al-Husayn (as) was born on Thursday, the 3rd of Sha’ban. Therefore, fast on that day and recite this supplication:’اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّى أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ الْمَوْلُودِ فِى هٰذَا الْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُودِ بِشَهادَتِهِ قَبْلَ اسْتِهْلالِهِ وَوِلادَتِهِ، بَكَتْهُ السَّماءُ وَمَنْ فِيها، وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَنْ عَلَيْها، وَلَمَّا يَطَأْ لابَتَيْها قَتِيلِ الْعَبْرَةِ، وَسَيِّدِ الْأُسْرَةِ، الْمَمْدُودِ بِالنُّصْرَةِ يَوْمَ الْكَرَّةِ، الْمُعَوَّضِ مِنْ قَتْلِهِ أَنَّ الْأَئِمَّةَ مِنْ نَسْلِهِ، وَالشِّفاءَ فِى تُرْبَتِهِ، وَالْفَوْزَ مَعَهُ فِى أَوْبَتِهِ، وَالْأَوْصِياءَ مِنْ عِتْرَتِهِ بَعْدَ قائِمِهِمْ وَغَيْبَتِهِ، حَتّىٰ يُدْرِكُوا الْأَوْتارَ، وَيَثْأَرُوا الثَّارَ، وَيُرْضُوا الْجَبَّارَ، وَيَكُونُوا خَيْرَ أَنْصارٍ، صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَعَ اخْتِلافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهارِO God, I ask You by the right of him who was born on this day, to whom martyrdom was promised before he appeared and was born, for whom the heavens and its denizens wept and so did the earth its denizens before he had even trodden its stony grounds, He is the slain one for whom the tears flow, the head of the family who will be aided on the Day of the Return. His restitution for having been slain is that the Imams are from his descent, healing lies in the dust of his shrine, and triumph will accompany him and the legatees of his, line at his return, after their Qa’im and his occultation, until they avenge the blood of the martyrs, pleasing God, and being the best of helpers. May Allah’s blessings be upon them as long as night and day follow one another.اللّٰهُمَّ فَبِحَقِّهِمْ إِلَيْكَ أَتَوَسَّلُ وَأَسْأَلُ سُؤالَ مُقْتَرِفٍ مُعْتَرِفٍ مُسِىءٍ إِلىٰ نَفْسِهِ مِمَّا فَرَّطَ فِى يَوْمِهِ وَأَمْسِهِ، يَسْأَلُكَ الْعِصْمَةَ إِلىٰ مَحَلِّ رَمْسِهِ؛ اللّٰهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعِتْرَتِهِ، وَاحْشُرْنا فِى زُمْرَتِهِ، وَبَوِّئْنا مَعَهُ دارَ الْكَرامَةِ، وَمَحَلَّ الْإِقامَةِ .O Allah, by their right with you, I seek recourse to you, beseeching You as someone who admits his guilt and the wrong he has done himself through negligence, day after day, to grant me protection until I reach my grave.O Allah, send salutations upon Muhammad and his descendants and gather us at resurrection in his fold and settle us with him in the abode of dignity and permanence. O Allah, just as you honored us with our knowledge of him, honor us also with nearness to him, grant us his companionship and precedence. Appoint us to among those who submit to his command, invoke much blessings on him when he is mentioned, as well as on all his successors and his elect, made by you twelve in number, the bright stars and your testaments to all mankind. O Allah, confer on us the best of gifts today, and grant us success in whatever we seek, just as you gave Husayn to Muhammad, his grandfather. The Angel Futrus sought refuge by Husayn’s cradle, and we seek shelter by his tomb. Being present at his graveside, we await his return. Amen, O Lord of all the worlds.”Dua of Imam Husayn (as)
Then recite the Supplication of Imam al-Husayn (as), which is his last supplication, made when surrounded by the hordes of enemies on the Day of Ashura. O Allah, exalted is Your station, supreme is Your power, and stupendous Your might! You have no need of the creatures, Your supremacy is all-embracing, and , You have the power to do whatever You wish. Your mercy is near, Your promise is true, Your blessings are plenteous, and Your tests are fair. You are near when called, and You encompass all that You have created, You accept the repentance of those who turn to You penitently. I turn to Your help in my weakness and put my trust in You as being sufficient for me. Judge between us and our people (with justice), for indeed they have dealt with us deceitfully and treacherously, forsaken us and betrayed us, and spilled our blood though we are the kindred of Your Prophet and the Progeny of Your beloved, Muhammad ibn Abdillah, whom You chose for You’re apostleship and trusted with Your revelation. So appoint us relief and release in our affair, with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!Ibn ‘Ayyash says, “l heard from al-Husayn b Ali b Sufyan Bazaufari that Imam Ja’far al Sadiq (as) used to recite this supplication on this day he would remark that it is one of the duas of the 3rd day of Sha’ban, the birthday of al-Husayn (as)”The Thirteenth Night of the month of Sha’ban

Observances For the Fifteenth Night of Sha’ban
This is a most auspicious night’ ln a report from Imam Ja’far a1-Sadiq (as) it is mentioned that Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) was asked about the excellence of the night of the 15th Sha’ban. He replied, saying it is the best of nights after the Night of Qadr! During it, God Almighty confers His grace on His servants and forgives them out of His favor and munificence, Therefore, try earnestly to obtain nearness to God during the course of this night. Indeed, it is a night wherein God has sworn by own His sacred Being not to turn away empty-handed any supplicant from His door unless he requests something sinful. It is a night which God Almighty has appointed for us, the family of the Apostle, in the same way that He appointed the Night of Qadr for our Apostle (as)’ therefore, apply yourself to celebrating His praise and supplicating Him on this night.’Among the blessed events pertaining to this auspicious night is the birth of the Master of the Age and the Imam of the Era, may our spirits be sacrificed for him, at daybreak following this night in the year 255/869 at Samarra (Surra Man Ra’a), an event which has enhanced the excellence of this auspicious night.’There are several observances pertaining to it:- Ghusl, an act which leads to remission of
- Observing the night’s vigil while engaging in prayer, supplication and istighfar, as such was the practice of Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (as). It is stated in a tradition that whoever keeps vigil during this night, his heart shall not die on the day when the hearts die.’
-
Performing the ziyarat of Imam Husayn (as) which is the most meritorious of observances pertaining to this night and an effective means for forgiveness of It has been said that whoever wishes to shake hands with the spirits of the 124,000 prophets should perform the ziyarah of that Imam on this night. The least one can do in performing this observance is to ascend to the roof of one’s house, and from there , after casting a glance to the right and the left, raise his head toward the sky and greet the Imam with the following words:
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبا عَبْدِاللّٰه، السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰه وَبَرَكاتُهُ.Salaam be upon you, O AbaAbdillah.
Peace be to you and the mercy of Allah and His favors.
It is hoped that whoever greets the Imam in this manner, at whatever time and regardless of his location, there shall be written for him the reward of Hajj pilgrimage and an ‘Umrah.Special Ziyarah of Imam Husayn (as) for this night

To recite the following supplication, cited by Shaykh Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus, which is tantamount to performing the ziyarah of the Imam of the Age, may Allah’s blessings be upon him:اللّٰهُمَّ بِحَقِّ لَيْلَتِنا هٰذِهِ وَمَوْلُودِها وَحُجَّتِكَ وَمَوْعُودِهَا، الَّتِى قَرَنْتَ إِلىٰ فَضْلِها فَضْلاً، فَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُكَ صِدْقاً وَعَدْلاً، لَامُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِماتِكَ، وَلَا مُعَقِّبَ لِآياتِكَ

He is Your brilliant light, Your shining radiance, the banner of light in the pitch dark night, who is concealed and in occultation. Exalted is his birthday and honored is his lineage. The angels are his assistants and God is his supporter and sponsor when the promised time comes and the angels will be among his assistants. He is the sword of Allah that never misses its aim, and His light that never grows dim. He is the gentle one who never deviates.(The Imams are) the axis of the age, the spirits of the Time, the guardians of Divine sovereignty, the destinations of that which comes down in the Night of ordainment, the superiors at Resurrection, the interpreters of His revelations, and the guardians of His commands and prohibitions. O Allah, bless their seal and their Qa’im,who is concealed from their realms.O Allah, enable us to witness his days, his appearance and his rising, and appoint us to be among his helpers, avenging the martyrs alongside him. To perform the prostrations and supplications narrated from the Apostle of Allah (sa), one of the reports which mentions them is that of Aban taghlib, narrated by Shaykh Tusi from Hammad ibn ‘Isa. According to it, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (as) relates that once the Apostle of Allah (sa) was at ‘A’isha’s apartment on the 15th night of Sha’ban. At midnight the Prophet (sa) rose from his bed for worship.‘A’isha, waking up soon after him, found that the Prophet had gone out. She thought that the Prophet (s) had left her for another of his wives, and was overcome with jealousy. She got up and wrapping herself in a shawl, went out to look for the Prophet (s) in the apartments of other wives, one after another. While she was looking for him, her eyes fell on the Apostle of Allah (sa) who lay prostrate in the darkness appearing like a cloak lying on the ground, on approaching, she heard the Prophet (sa) say in the state of prostration,سَجَدَ لَكَ سَوادِي وَخَيالِي، وَ آمَنَ بِكَ فُؤادِي، هٰذِهِ يَدايَ وَمَا جَنَيْتُهُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِي، يَا عَظِيمُ تُرْجىٰ لِكُلِّ عَظِيمٍ اغْفِرْ لِيَ الْعَظِيمَ فَإِنَّهُ لَايَغْفِرُ الذَّنْبَ الْعَظِيمَ إِلّا الرَّبُّ الْعَظِيمُMy inner being and spirit prostrate to You, and my heart affirms its faith in You!
These are my hands and the injuries that I have inflicted upon my own soul!
0 Supreme One, on whom are pinned great hopes, forgive my great sin, for no one forgives great sins except the Supreme Lord!
Then he rose and again went down in prostration and A’isha heard him say,أَعُوذُ بِنُورِ وَجْهِكَ الَّذِي أَضاءَتْ لَهُ السَّماواتُ وَالْأَرَضُونَ، وَانْكَشَفَتْ لَهُ الظُّلُماتُ، وَصَلَحَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ مِنْ فُجْأَةِ نَقِمَتِكَ، وَمِنْ تَحْوِيلِ عافِيَتِكَ، وَمِنْ زَوالِ نِعْمَتِكَ . اللّٰهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي قَلْباً تَقِيّاً نَقِيّاً وَمِنَ الشِّرْكِ بَرِيئاً لَاكافِراً وَلَا شَقِيّاً‘l seek refuge in the light of Your Face-which illuminates all the heavens and the earths, which dispels all darkness, and through which are set right the affairs of the former and the latter generations from Your prompt vengeance and from the withdrawal of the blessings and welfare granted by You!O Allah, give me a pious and pure heart, untainted by polytheism, and one that is neither faithless nor wretched! Then laying down each of his cheeks on the ground, he said:عَفَّرْتُ وَجْهِي فِي التُّرابِ وَحُقَّ لِي أَنْ أَسْجُدَ لَكَI smear my face with dust and it behooves me to prostrate to You!As the Apostle of Allah (s) made to return, ‘A’isha made off to her bed. When the Prophet was back, he heard her breathing heavily and asked why she was breathing hard. Then he said to her, “Don’t you know what night it is? This is the night of the middle of Sha’ban in which every creature’s share of its provision is assigned. During it the terms of their lives are ordained, and those destined to perform hajj pilgrimage during the year are designated. Indeed, God Almighty pardons on this night more of His servants than the number of hair in the fleece of the sheep of the tribe of Banu Kalb, and He sends his angels down from the heaven to Makkah on the earth,” -

The Fifteenth Day of Sha’ban
This is the day of the auspicious birth of our master and the Master of the Era, the twelfth Imam, the Mahdi and the Hujjah, son of al-Hasan al-‘Askari, may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his ancestors. It is mustahab to perform his ziyarah at all times and places, and to supplicate for his early appearance while performing his ziyarah, whose performance in the basement at the shrine at Samarra has been strongly urged. Devote yourself to what is beneficial for you. Supplicate a lot and plead for forgiveness. Read as much of the Glorious Qur’an as you can, and repent to God for your sins, so that when the blessed month of Ramadhan sets in you will have purified yourself for the sake of cod. Let there remain no liability or unpaid debt you owe somebody, and let there be no ill-feeling left in your heart against anyone. Let there remain no trace of sinfui conduct without your desisting from it. Fear God and put your trust in Him in your public and private matters, and God suffices those who trust Him. Recite this supplication often in the remaining part of this month,اللَّهُمَّ أن لَم يکُن غَفَرتَ لَنَا فيي مَا مَضَي مِن شَعبَانَ فَاغفِر لَنَا فِيمَا بَقِي مِنهO Allah, if You did not forgive us in the part of Sha’ban that has passed, do forgive us in what remains of it!“Indeed, God Almighty delivers many of His servants from the fire of hell during this month by reason of the sanctity of the blessed month of Ramadhan.”
